The
History
Founded in 1895, Chiropractic, from the Greek words "cheiro" and "praktikos"
to practice by hand, is the largest drugless health care profession in
the U.S.A. It's a philosophy, science and art concerned with the relationship
between the nervous system and the function (health) of the body.
The Philosophy
The premise of chiropractic is that our body has a natural ability
to maintain health and heal itself. During the normal course of living,
physical, emotional or chemical stresses occur which interfere with the
body's ability to maintain optimum health. The chiropractor's function
is to locate and reduce spinal misalignments (subluxations) which inhibits
natural healing.
The Science
Chiropractic is based on scientific fact that the nervous system (brain
and spinal cord) controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ and
system of your body. The skull protects the brain, and the 24 moveable
vertebrae protect the spinal cord. When vertebrae lose their normal motion
or position, they can interrupt the nerve flow- communication system.
The result of uncorrected spinal malfunction can ultimately lead to pain,
muscle and/or organ dysfunction. Chiropractors utilize the science of
chiropractic to local and correct these dysfunctional areas.
The Art
Following a comprehensive health history and physical exam, the chiropractic
doctor will recommend a care program that includes specific spinal adjustments.
It is this adjustment that is the art of chiropractic. An adjustment is
a carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore spinal bones to
a more normal position and motion. When spinal function is improved, nervous
system function is also improved.
